Tales of Vesperia is the first major JRPG release for 2019. I’ve always had a complex relationship with the Tales series for its combat, so in this video I take a short look at the combat system – what I enjoy, and what frustrates me.

Minor correction to what I said at 5:55, the held direction should still be the direction you are facing like what I mentioned previously, not what direction the enemy is in. I wasn’t thinking when I said that. See the controller inputs I put on-screen.

Also to be more specific at 3:29, only entering neutral will truly reset your attack count limit. Letting a recovery animation play out in full automatically puts you into neutral afterwards, which is why it also works. As for guarding, guarding and letting go to attack will put you into neutral after the guard and before the attack, so the limit will still get reset, however the act of guarding itself will not reset the limit. You’ll notice this if you perform an arte chain utilizing the Step Combo skill, since you go from your previous attack into free run, into guard, into backstep, into step combo, and finally into an arte. You never actually enter neutral.
